Dear Parents,

World Book Day is on Thursday 3rd March 2016. The aim is to promote the enjoyment of reading and give the children in our school a sense of all they can gain from books.

We would like the children to dress up as a character from their favourite book and to bring the book to school so they can talk about it with the class or to visitors to the class. There is a ‘World Book Day competition’ and lots of activities in the school on that day. We would be delighted if you could come and read or tell a short story or poem on the morning of World Book Day – 3rd March 2016. It’s best to check with your child’s teacher for a suitable time.

Here is a list of sample activities on in the school Thurs 3rd & Fri 4th March:

  • Children to dress up as their favourite book character
  • Parents reading a short story or poem to the class on Thursday morning
  • Author/ guests reading to the class
  • Book review (oral or written)
  • Drawing a Comic Strip of favourite book
  • Designing a book cover
  • Book quiz
  • Class teacher/ Teachers from other classes reading stories/ poems
  • Drawing favourite book character
  • Hot seating a character from a book
  • Dramatisation of story/ scene from a book
  • Showing DVD/ Netflix of film on book eg Goosebumps
  • Classes designing screen saver for computer/ IWB

If you know of any ‘famous authors’ or celebrities we would be glad to give them the opportunity to read to children in the school. Check with Joanne Keane who can provide you with a book to read to a class and will make arrangements about what class would be suitable to visit.

Please talk about your own favourite book at home and help instill a love of reading.

Yours sincerely,

The Literacy Team
